The Rainbow School for autistic children is an
independent non-profit making school that aims to be a centre of
excellence for children diagnosed with autism and/or related the
communications disorders. The school caters for children with autism
from age of four upwards. The founding principle of the school is
to help the children to reach their full potential within a caring,
safe environment.
The Rainbow School employs Applied Behavioural
Analysis (ABA) as its teaching method. The principles of ABA, such
as individualised programming, increasing appropriate skills through
the use of positive reinforcement, step by step teaching, consistency
and working one to one in a structured environment have been shown
to be highly effective in the long term outcome of children with
autism. (see Lovaas et al - http://www.lovaas.com/
resources page and our "Teaching Aims and
Objectives" section for more details).
The Rainbow School staff are all very dedicated,
caring and experienced. All are fully trained in ABA techniques.
The children receive assistance from local Speech and Language and
Occupational Therapists as appropriate to their individual needs.
The school originally started operating from a
small outbuilding at Beatrix Potter Primary School with 3 children
in September 2000. In August 2002 we moved into larger premises.
We are now working to raise enough funds to adapt and develop our
new premises so that we can take in 18 children. If you would like
